The most common symptoms of a bad idle control valve are rough idle and a check engine light on your dashboard. You may also notice fluctuating idle speed or a stalling engine on idle when your IAC valve is bad. Here is a more detailed list of the signs of a bad or failing idle air control valve (IAC) to look for: 1. Check Engine Light. 29,437. Location. Surrey. My first thought was valve stem seals too. This is normally characterised by a small amount of blueish smoke on the overrun (ie when coming off the throttle) or when pulling away. I'd also expect to see some at startup although you don't say that is happening. 15 Mar 2015 at 09:58. I have 2004 E46 318i N42B20 with 188000km. During this year it started to produce dense white smoke, especially when idling in traffic, and it is very bad when engine is cold, gets a bit better when warmed up, but still smoking (smoke smells like oil and gasoline). Oil consumption is also increased.
Currently running Mobil 1 0W30. Symptoms: -Burning oil smell after driving the car hard, or after driving on the highway for any decent length of time. -Only noticeable at idle, driving dilutes it past the odor threshold immediately. -Can smell it through the climate control and outside the car slightly.
bad crankcase oil separator valve CCV, aka PCV [air:fuel ratio] bad idle control valve ICV [air:fuel ratio] bad throttle position sensor TPS [air:fuel ratio] bad VANOS seals [compression, air:fuel ratio] head gasket leak, or a cracked block [compression, air:fuel ratio] However, that list above is NOT a debugging algorithm! 1. Oil leaks. Oil leaks are one of the symptoms most commonly associated with a bad crankcase vent filter. The crankcase filter simply filters the blow by gases to make sure that they are clean before they are rerouted back into the vehicle’s intake manifold. Over time, the filter can get dirty and restrict the air flow, and therefore
EXPLANATION !!! If you open the cap while the engine is idling, the idle after opening must be different. If the idle (speed or sound) is the same, it me

This is the PITA hose that comes off the back of the valve cover, then goes down to two places under the intake manifold. I've just installed X3 #2's new valve cover, but heard a crack when moving that hose out of the way. Fortunately I have a new hose on the shelf.
It was probably the hose. They get brittle with age due to the plastic and anything near 10 years old is marginal at best. Unless you're super gentle with it, it will almost surely crack during a repair. 2003 330i TiAg Sport Pkg ~110k miles.
